Video game payments

Video game payment processing

A downloadable game, publisher web shop, monthly game pass, battle pass, in-game currency pack, player marketplace, and cash-prize contest are different payment products. The acquirer needs the seller, entitlement, currency loop, and chance-or-prize mechanics, not simply a “gaming” label.

ACI Worldwide

ACI Worldwide supplies payment software. The merchant-facing ACI Payments Orchestration Platform provides an acquirer-independent gateway, routing, alternative-payment-method connections, omni-tokenisation, fraud decisioning and consolidated payment data. ACI Acquiring is separate software that banks and merchant acquirers use to run their own acquiring operations. In both products ACI provides technology; the merchant or PSP contracts with its chosen acquirers and payment providers, and those parties provide any merchant account or MID, underwrite payment acceptance, hold funds and settle transactions.

Bango

Bango supplies two distinct products for digital commerce. Bango Payments is an API layer that connects a merchant to direct carrier billing and wallet payment providers; the merchant remains the seller and ordinarily negotiates and receives its payment-provider settlement directly. The Digital Vending Machine bundles subscriptions for resellers and content providers, coordinating catalogue, entitlement, offer and billing events without making Bango the universal seller to the subscriber, card acquirer or merchant-account provider.

Coda

Coda provides digital-commerce payment products whose legal and funds roles depend on the contract. Codapay connects a publisher to local and global payment channels through one API and supports arrangements in which either the publisher or an applicable Coda entity is Merchant of Record. Codashop and Coda-operated web stores can use a Coda reseller sale in which the named Coda entity sells the digital product to the buyer. Coda Payments Pte. Ltd. separately holds a Singapore Major Payment Institution licence that includes merchant acquisition, but that permission does not make it the acquirer for every Coda product, market or transaction.

Cybersource

Cybersource, a Visa company, provides a global payment gateway and orchestration platform, Unified Checkout, REST payment APIs, Token Management Service, Decision Manager, payer authentication, payment reporting and card-network payout connectivity. Its standard gateway path connects the merchant to external processors and acquirers; those parties provide any merchant account or MID, perform merchant underwriting, hold funds and settle transactions. The production Cybersource or Visa counterparty is determined by the signed agreement and territory rather than the non-production Developer Center terms. A current United States card-services package uses a separate agreement with Global Payments Direct, Inc., while the Cybersource Payment Services Agreement remains separate.

The EBANX brand covers multiple group companies and local partners; the contracting entity, payment methods, settlement model and product availability depend on the merchant agreement and country. The documented flows do not establish EBANX as the merchant of record or a universal direct acquirer: the merchant remains the seller, while local acquirers, banks and payment rails may perform regulated parts of the flow.

Decision brief

Define the publisher, platform and virtual-item economy

Use this page when

Game sales, in-app purchases, virtual currency, creator content or marketplace payouts create different payment roles.

  1. Player-facing seller

Identify whether the publisher, platform, creator or payment partner sells each item to the player.

  2. Item rules

Document virtual currency, randomized rewards, gifting, transfer and refund restrictions by market and age group.

  3. Player evidence

Link the charge to account, device, item delivery and use while controlling account takeover and disputes after account use.

Prepare product-specific evidence

  • Game, item, currency and marketplace terms
  • Player age, region, account and device controls
  • Purchase, delivery, consumption and refund records
01

Define the product and seller behind every charge

Identify whether the customer buys a base game, downloadable content, subscription, season pass, virtual currency, item, marketplace trade, tournament entry or another product. Link each checkout to the legal seller, platform, publisher, developer and player account involved.

A console or app store may be merchant of record while a publisher's web shop processes directly. A platform that collects from players and pays creators, teams or sellers has a different funds flow again. Underwriting must cover the actual channel rather than the game's brand as a whole.

  • List each store, app, game, platform, legal entity, descriptor, country and age rating.
  • Map who sets price, grants the entitlement, handles refunds, owns tax, and receives settlement.
  • Describe transfer, cash-out, gifting, trading and resale rules for every paid currency or item.
02

Keep digital games separate from wagering

Visa MCC 5816 covers electronically delivered games, including in-app purchases and games of skill, while games of chance are excluded from that digital-goods definition. The acquirer assigns the MCC from the product and transaction; the word gaming is not enough to distinguish entertainment purchases from regulated wagering.

Disclose cash prizes, paid random rewards, staking, entry fees, player-to-player value and any conversion back to money or third-party goods. Those mechanics can change legal analysis, card-network classification and provider appetite by country. A provider's approval for game sales does not approve gambling.

Do not hide the value loop

If paid value can be transferred, traded, redeemed, wagered or cashed out, draw the complete loop and name every operator. Treat regulatory classification as a jurisdiction-specific legal question.

03

Map the real-money and virtual-currency ledgers

A currency pack creates at least two records: the processor charge and the player's units. Keep the exchange rate, package, bonus units, balance, item purchase, gift, refund, expiry and adjustment events so finance and support can reconstruct value without editing history.

The EU Consumer Protection Cooperation Network's principles address in-game virtual currencies bought with real-world value and used mainly for in-game content or services. They call for real-money price display, warn against mismatched packs, and address withdrawal rights. Apply current consumer rules in each market; as an operational control, keep price conversion and remaining balance visible even where those principles do not directly apply.

05

Tie every payment to delivery and player-account evidence

Join the processor transaction to the payer, player account, game, platform, SKU, currency ledger, entitlement grant, device and IP data, and later use. Preserve the accepted offer and refund policy. Visa describes compelling evidence as information showing cardholder participation or use, but the eligible evidence and outcome depend on the dispute condition.

Monitor card testing, account takeover, stolen accounts, bot purchases, promotional abuse, refund resale and rapid movement of transferable value. A high-value established account and a newly created account receiving gifted currency should not share one control threshold.

06

Price subscriptions, refunds, platform settlement, and reserves together

A publisher can pay store commission, processing, currency conversion, fraud, dispute, refund and payout fees across different channels. Compare the economics per product and country, then model a rolling reserve or delayed settlement against refunds and any developer, creator or marketplace payouts.

  • Which games, products, stores, legal entities, countries, MCCs and prize mechanics are approved?
  • Are subscriptions, in-app purchases, virtual currency, gifting, marketplaces and creator payouts each in scope?
  • Which transaction, account, entitlement and usage fields can be exported for a dispute?
  • What happens to balances, refunds, settlement and reserves when a game, account or processor is shut down?

FAQ

Common questions

Are video games and gambling the same payment category?

No. Ordinary digital game sales and in-app purchases can fall under a digital-games MCC, while games of chance and wagering use different classifications and can require licensing. Disclose prize, entry-fee and cash-out mechanics for a provider decision.

What records should a virtual-currency merchant keep?

Keep the real-money charge, exchange rate, currency grant, balance changes, items bought, gifting or transfers, refunds and later use, all joined to the player account and processor transaction. Avoid manual balance edits without an audit record.

Does a game store need parental controls?

Controls depend on audience, platform and jurisdiction, but a merchant should make every purchase intentional and clearly priced. Child-accessible accounts need an appropriate payer-authentication or parental-approval design and a workable unauthorized-purchase process.

Can one merchant account cover every game and platform?

Only if the acquirer approves the legal entity, titles, stores, products, countries, billing models and value mechanics. A new cash-prize mode, marketplace or transferable currency can require a fresh review even when the publisher is unchanged.
