Adult payments

Adult payment processing

Adult sites are not underwritten as one category. A subscription library, live-cam platform, creator marketplace, dating service, and physical-goods store can have different MCCs, card-network requirements, payment flows, and chargeback exposure.

Decision brief

Align content controls with the payment contract

Use this page when

Adult content, creator payouts or user uploads affect underwriting, card-network monitoring and dispute evidence.

  1. Content boundary

Define prohibited content, age controls, consent records and the review process for uploaded material.

  2. Seller model

Determine whether the platform, creator or another party is the customer-facing seller and payment counterparty.

  3. Evidence retention

Connect transaction records to account access, content delivery, identity and consent evidence.

  • Descriptor, billing consent, refund and creator-payout flows
01

Start with the business model, not the adult label

A payment gateway only carries transaction data. Card acceptance still requires an acquiring bank or payment service provider willing to board the legal entity and the specific product. A provider that supports one adult business model may not support another.

Visa assigns MCC 5967 to adult content and services. That does not mean every business associated with adult products belongs under that code: an acquirer assigns the MCC from the merchant's principal activity, sales channel, and actual checkout. Creator payouts, marketplace funds flow, physical merchandise, dating, and live content should be described separately during underwriting.

  • State whether customers buy downloads, subscriptions, credits, tips, live sessions, physical goods, or access to a marketplace.
  • Identify who contracts with the customer, who supplies the content, and who receives each part of the payment.
  • List every website, app, descriptor, legal entity, and country involved in the transaction.
02

What an adult merchant should have ready for underwriting

The application usually combines standard merchant due diligence with a close review of content operations. The acquirer needs to understand ownership, sales practices, fulfillment, cancellation, moderation, and the controls applied to people who upload or appear in content.

Exact requirements vary by acquirer and card brand. A clean file reduces follow-up but does not guarantee approval or a particular reserve.

  • Formation documents, beneficial-owner details, government IDs, business bank statements, and recent processing statements.
  • A complete URL and app list, product and price list, billing descriptor, refund policy, cancellation path, terms, privacy notice, and customer-support details.
  • Where user content is involved, document age and identity checks, consent, creator agreements, pre-publication review, live-stream monitoring, complaint handling, and content removal.
  • Chargeback, refund, fraud, and customer-service records broken out by site and billing model.
03

Card-network registration and recurring billing are separate checks

Visa treats adult content and services as an integrity-risk category. Mastercard's rules for non-face-to-face adult content require controls for age and identity, consent, content review, complaints, and removal. The merchant normally works through its acquirer on any required registration; a gateway connection is not a substitute.

For an online subscription or other negative-option offer, the checkout must clearly present the material terms before billing information is collected, obtain express informed consent, and provide a simple way to stop recurring charges. Those customer-facing steps also reduce disputes over unrecognized renewals.

Do not assume a prior registration transfers

Confirm the registered legal entity, URLs, MCC, descriptor, acquirer, and card brands for the new account. A registration tied to another acquirer or website may not cover the proposed setup.

04

Build the payment operation around preventable disputes

Adult subscriptions commonly face disputes caused by an unfamiliar descriptor, unclear renewal terms, cancellation friction, or a customer who does not recognize the purchase. Platforms also need controls for account takeover, card testing, duplicate accounts, stolen content, and abuse of credits or tips.

Keep the checkout record, consent and renewal terms, login and usage history, customer messages, cancellation time, refunds, and delivery details in a form that can be retrieved within the processor's dispute deadline. Monitor both count and value, because acquirers and card networks can act when fraud or dispute activity exceeds their current program thresholds.

  • Use a recognizable descriptor and show it before payment and in receipts.
  • Send renewal notices when required and make cancellation and refunds operationally reachable.
  • Separate card-testing controls from customer authentication; they address different attacks.
  • Track dispute reason, site, offer, traffic source, issuer country, and product so corrective action is specific.
05

Read the reserve and settlement terms as cash-flow terms

Adult merchant pricing is normally quoted after underwriting. The commercial package can combine discount rate, authorization and gateway charges, and card-brand or registration costs. It can also include chargeback fees, refund handling, minimums, and cross-border or currency conversion charges.

A rolling reserve is only usable when the agreement states the withheld percentage, the transactions it applies to, who holds it, the release schedule, any cap, and what happens after termination. Also confirm settlement delay, payout currency, negative-balance funding, refund funding, volume and ticket limits, and the provider's right to change terms after a risk review.

06

Questions to settle before signing

Ask for written answers tied to the exact legal entity and adult business model. A general statement that a provider works with adult merchants is not an approval decision.

  • Which MCC, card brands, countries, URLs, billing models, and descriptors are approved?
  • Who is the acquirer, and which party owns underwriting, settlement, disputes, and reserve release?
  • Are creator marketplaces, live streaming, tips, stored value, and payouts within scope?
  • What fraud and dispute thresholds, remediation steps, volume caps, and termination rights apply?
  • Which integration supports recurring credentials, account updater, 3-D Secure, refunds, and reporting?

FAQ

Common questions

Can an ordinary payment gateway process adult transactions?

A gateway may have the technical capability, but card acceptance also requires an acquiring or PSP agreement that approves the merchant, MCC, websites, products, countries, and billing model. Gateway access alone is not approval for an adult high-risk merchant account.

What MCC is used for adult content?

Visa identifies MCC 5967 for adult content and services. The acquiring bank assigns the code from the actual business and checkout, so a mixed business, dating service, marketplace, or physical-goods seller should not select a code on its own.

Do all adult accounts require a rolling reserve?

No universal reserve applies to every adult merchant. The amount and structure depend on the acquirer, business model, processing history, chargebacks, fulfillment, countries, and expected volume. Treat only the signed merchant agreement as the operative term.

What matters most for an adult subscription checkout?

Clear price and renewal terms, express consent, a recognizable descriptor, receipts, an accessible cancellation route, timely refunds, and retrievable records of the customer's purchase and use all matter. Content-control requirements remain a separate obligation.
