Card acceptance
High-Risk Credit Card Processing
High-risk credit card processing gives an approved merchant access to card acquiring under conditions set by the acquirer, card networks, and merchant agreement. For online and recurring businesses, the important details are the approved MCC and sales model, card-not-present controls, dispute exposure, funding terms, and who can change or terminate the account.

Reviewed high-risk credit-card processing products
These products document card acceptance for at least one reviewed industry and include processing, acquiring, merchant-account, Merchant of Record, PayFac or platform payment services. Bank-only, wallet-only and software-only products are left out. Confirm the exact product and industry combination; card acceptance still depends on the business, country, MCC and underwriting decision.

Coda
Coda provides digital-commerce payment products whose legal and funds roles depend on the contract. Codapay connects a publisher to local and global payment channels through one API and supports arrangements in which either the publisher or an applicable Coda entity is Merchant of Record. Codashop and Coda-operated web stores can use a Coda reseller sale in which the named Coda entity sells the digital product to the buyer. Coda Payments Pte. Ltd. separately holds a Singapore Major Payment Institution licence that includes merchant acquisition, but that permission does not make it the acquirer for every Coda product, market or transaction.

Elavon
Elavon is the merchant-payments product line of U.S. Bank. Its documented U.S. merchant-processing route is supplied by Elavon, Inc. with a designated Member that is initially U.S. Bank, N.A. or Elavon, Inc.; Elavon processes transactions and provisional merchant funding while the Member facilitates settlement through the banking rails. Converge is separately documented as a hosted gateway that can send transactions to Elavon or a third-party destination, so the gateway alone does not establish who supplies the merchant account, underwriting or settlement. In the UK, the regulated entity is U.S. Bank Europe DAC, formerly Elavon Financial Services DAC, operating through its registered UK branch and trading as Elavon Merchant Services.

Global Payments
Global Payments sells merchant payment processing and commerce technology through different legal and bank structures. In the documented U.S. sponsorship model, Global Payments Direct, Inc. is the processor and registered ISO while a member bank sponsors the card activity, retains control of network settlement funds until the merchant is funded and participates in merchant acceptance. In the UK, GPUK LLP is the FCA-authorised payment-services entity behind the Global Payments trading name. European materials describe both financial-institution processing capabilities and merchant card-acceptance contracts with Global Payments s.r.o.; the public sources reviewed do not establish one universal responsibility split for every s.r.o. relationship.

Mollie
Mollie provides regulated online and in-person payment services for businesses in the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Mollie B.V. is the Dutch-regulated entity for EEA services, while Mollie UK Ltd provides the UK-regulated service and UK settlement route; UK non-card EU methods can pass first through Mollie B.V. and Stichting Mollie Payments before Mollie UK safeguards and pays out the funds. Mollie processes and settles merchant payments but its general card route connects merchants to external method acquirers and financial institutions. Mollie states that it became an iDEAL acquirer, but that method-specific role does not make Mollie a universal card acquirer, traditional merchant-account provider or dedicated-MID provider.

PPRO
PPRO connects payment service providers and approved direct merchants to local payment methods through the PPRO Global API, checkout products and the PPRO Payment Gateway. Its funds and commercial roles are product-specific: PPRO Payment Services S.A. fulfils settlement obligations for methods in which PPRO receives funds, processing-only methods expressly keep funds outside PPRO, and PPRO's current Mexico product combines Mexican local-acquiring access with a payment-local Merchant-of-Record route for merchants that may be located inside or outside Mexico. PPRO performs the payment-related local collection, remittance and associated tax procedures defined by the LATAM terms; the Contractual Partner remains the product seller and retains product, consumer and tax liability. PPRO does not publicly establish one universal merchant account, acquiring-bank MID or direct licensed-acquirer role across these paths.

Worldline
Worldline combines regulated card acquiring with online and in-person payment technology. The documented UK route contracts through Worldline Merchant Services UK Limited, an FCA-authorised payment institution that underwrites the merchant, processes transactions, safeguards merchant funds and settles the approved card activity. Its Online Payments Gateway is a separate non-regulated SaaS service that can route to Worldline acquiring or to a third-party acquirer; on the latter route it does not supply that acquirer’s merchant account, underwriting or settlement.

Decision brief
Confirm the card-acquiring path, not only card acceptance
Use this page when
A product must accept credit or debit cards and the acquiring, underwriting and merchant-account arrangement matters.
Card role
Distinguish a gateway or orchestration connection from a processor, acquirer, payment facilitator or Merchant of Record relationship.
MID structure
Confirm whether the merchant receives a dedicated MID, uses a platform account or sells through another merchant of record.
Dispute owner
Assign responsibility for descriptors, evidence, representment, refunds and chargeback fees before launch.
Ask for product-specific answers
- Supported card brands, regions, currencies and transaction types
- Named underwriter, acquirer and settlement party
- Production volume and ticket limits, plus access to settlement and token data after termination
Make the card-acceptance approval specific
Card approval attaches to the named merchant, owners, websites, products, descriptor, MCC, customer locations, currencies, transaction channels, and expected volume described in the application. Approval for retail card-present sales does not automatically cover an online subscription business, and approval for one website does not automatically cover another.
Ask whether the offer is a direct merchant account, a payment-facilitator sub-merchant account, or a referral to another acquirer. Each model can be legitimate, but the agreement should make the contracting and settlement chain clear.
Match checkout controls to card-not-present risk
A useful card setup combines clear customer authorization with technical controls appropriate to the transaction. Address Verification Service, card security code checks, device and behavioral signals, velocity controls, 3-D Secure, network tokens, and stored-credential indicators address different risks; no single control guarantees that a transaction will be free from fraud or disputes.
Recurring merchants should confirm initial customer consent, renewal notices, cancellation, credential-on-file indicators, failed-payment retries, account updater support, and the descriptor that appears on the cardholder statement.
- Hosted, embedded, or direct API card collection
- 3-D Secure support and exemption handling
- Network or gateway token ownership and export
- Recurring, merchant-initiated, and account-updater support
Operate below contractual and card-network monitoring limits
Acquirers and card networks monitor fraud and disputes. The relevant program, calculation, threshold, and remediation process can differ by network and region and can change over time. Merchants should obtain current requirements from their acquirer and monitor both counts and ratios rather than waiting for a monthly warning.
Pre-dispute alerts and automated responses can reduce handling time, but they do not fix unclear billing, weak fulfillment, or a confusing descriptor. Track dispute reason, product, traffic source, issuer country, transaction age, refund attempt, and prior customer contact so operational causes can be addressed.
Put card fees, reserves, and settlement on the same model
Card fees can include interchange or a blended rate, processor markup, network assessments, authorization fees, gateway fees, cross-border charges, chargeback and retrieval fees, refunds, monthly minimums, and currency conversion. A low headline rate can be offset by a reserve or long settlement delay.
The reserve clause should state the percentage or amount, funding source, hold period, release method, and rights after termination. Settlement terms should cover cutoffs, weekends, negative balances, and the currency delivered to the merchant’s bank account.
Resolve card-account limits before integration
Integration should begin after the commercial and approval scope is understood. A technically successful test transaction says nothing about live volume limits, reserve rights, or whether the acquirer approved the merchant’s full product set.
- Approved MCC, descriptor, websites, products, countries, and recurring model
- Monthly volume, average ticket, maximum ticket, and card-not-present share
- Reserve, settlement, chargeback, refund, and termination terms
- Required fraud controls and current monitoring obligations
- Reporting, reconciliation, token portability, and support escalation
FAQ
Common questions
What makes credit card processing high risk?
The label usually reflects the acquirer’s view of chargebacks, fraud, fulfillment, regulatory exposure, continuity, transaction size, sales method, or other loss factors. Providers do not use one universal definition or industry list.
Does 3-D Secure prevent chargebacks?
No. 3-D Secure can authenticate a cardholder and may affect liability for eligible fraud disputes, but it does not prevent every dispute reason, operational error, refund problem, or card-network monitoring issue.
Can a merchant process above its approved monthly volume?
The merchant should request a limit review before materially exceeding the approved amount. Unplanned volume spikes can trigger review, delayed funding, reserve changes, or other action under the agreement.
Are card-network monitoring thresholds the same everywhere?
No. Programs and thresholds differ by network, region, metric, and effective date. Use current network material and the acquirer’s written requirements for the account rather than a fixed number copied from an old guide.
