Streaming media payments

Streaming media payment processing

A subscription catalog, live-event pass, paid channel, rental or download store, creator-tip flow, and ad-funded service do not share one payment contract. The provider must know who sells access, whether charges recur, when content is delivered, and whether money is retained for creators.

Bango

Bango supplies two distinct products for digital commerce. Bango Payments is an API layer that connects a merchant to direct carrier billing and wallet payment providers; the merchant remains the seller and ordinarily negotiates and receives its payment-provider settlement directly. The Digital Vending Machine bundles subscriptions for resellers and content providers, coordinating catalogue, entitlement, offer and billing events without making Bango the universal seller to the subscriber, card acquirer or merchant-account provider.

Boku

Boku provides a mobile-first local-payment network covering wallets, account-to-account schemes, buy-now-pay-later and direct carrier billing through one API and consolidated settlement. The relevant Boku operating entity processes or collects under the merchant agreement, while mobile carriers, wallets, banks, payment schemes and other acquirers remain separate participants. Named Boku entities provide regulated acquiring in specified markets, but the wider network does not give every merchant a card merchant account, MID or direct-acquiring relationship.

Cybersource

Cybersource, a Visa company, provides a global payment gateway and orchestration platform, Unified Checkout, REST payment APIs, Token Management Service, Decision Manager, payer authentication, payment reporting and card-network payout connectivity. Its standard gateway path connects the merchant to external processors and acquirers; those parties provide any merchant account or MID, perform merchant underwriting, hold funds and settle transactions. The production Cybersource or Visa counterparty is determined by the signed agreement and territory rather than the non-production Developer Center terms. A current United States card-services package uses a separate agreement with Global Payments Direct, Inc., while the Cybersource Payment Services Agreement remains separate.

Digital Virgo

Digital Virgo connects merchants, digital-content publishers and telecom operators through the DV PASS carrier-billing platform. DV PASS manages merchant connections, subscriptions, transaction status, fraud controls and customer-care workflows, while the mobile operator controls subscriber eligibility, posts the charge to the prepaid balance or monthly bill and collects from the subscriber. UAB DV Payment, Digital Virgo's active Lithuanian electronic-money institution, separately contracts for regulated acquiring, holds transaction funds in segregated accounts and settles approved merchants. Its licence and funds role do not apply automatically to every DV PASS deployment or Digital Virgo group company.

Durango Merchant Services

Durango Merchant Services is an ISO/MSP that prepares high-risk merchant-account applications and connects businesses with partner banks, processors, ODFIs, and payment platforms. EBANX

EBANX provides Pay-in processing, local payment methods, recurring payments, fraud and checkout tools, cross-border or local settlement, and Payouts across emerging markets in Latin America, Africa and Asia. The EBANX brand covers multiple group companies and local partners; the contracting entity, payment methods, settlement model and product availability depend on the merchant agreement and country. The documented flows do not establish EBANX as the merchant of record or a universal direct acquirer: the merchant remains the seller, while local acquirers, banks and payment rails may perform regulated parts of the flow.

Gr4vy

Gr4vy, Inc. supplies single-tenant cloud payment-orchestration software. Its universal API, Embed and Secure Fields checkout components, Flow rules, card vault, PSP and network tokenization, 3-D Secure controls, external anti-fraud connections, reporting and settlement-report reconciliation sit between a merchant and the merchant's own payment providers. Gr4vy for Platforms adds a white-label, multi-merchant route with separate workflows, routing and provider connections for each underlying merchant. The merchant or platform keeps the direct account, contract, fees and credentials with each connected provider. Gr4vy does not supply the acquiring merchant account or MID, perform payment underwriting or direct acquiring, hold merchant funds, or settle funds to the merchant.

Recurly

Recurly is subscription-management, recurring-billing and payment-orchestration technology. A merchant connects its own supported payment gateway and merchant bank account; the gateway, processor and acquirer authorize the payment, underwrite the merchant account, hold any reserve and settle funds to the merchant's bank. Recurly stores and routes payment data, manages plans, invoices, subscriptions, retries, dunning and reporting, but its terms state that Recurly is not a bank, does not hold merchant or customer money and is not responsible for transaction amounts. Reach can be connected separately as merchant of record; that makes Reach, not Recurly, the seller and funds-flow party for that route.

Decision brief

Connect billing consent to access and renewal records

Use this page when

Recurring access, trials, plan changes and shared accounts affect consent, fraud and disputes.

  1. Subscription contract

State trial conversion, billing cadence, plan changes, cancellation and refund terms before payment.

  2. Access evidence

Retain account, device, session and content-access records that support the agreed service without overcollecting.

  3. Recovery policy

    Set retry, account-updater, grace-period, access-suspension and failed-payment rules together.

Review the full subscriber lifecycle

  • Trial, renewal, cancellation and price-change consent
  • Account, device and access records for disputes
  • Retry, refund, chargeback and rules for ending access
01

Separate subscription, event, rental, and creator-payment models

Describe what a customer pays for: recurring catalog access, a single live event, a rental window, a permanent download, an individual channel, tips, credits or an ad-free tier. Define when access begins and ends, what happens if an event is canceled, and whether the purchase belongs to a platform or a third-party creator.

Name the legal seller at checkout and on the statement. If the platform collects for channels or creators, document its merchant-of-record or agency role. Then document creator onboarding, content policy, refund authority, tax responsibility, payout timing and the handling of negative balances.

  • List each service, site, app, subscription tier, event type, legal entity, descriptor and country.
  • Map the customer payment, platform share, content-owner or creator payout, refund and chargeback.
  • Separate customer access credentials from creator balances and any transferable credits.
02

Choose the MCC from delivery and billing, not the word streaming

Visa's merchant data standards distinguish electronically delivered films and music under MCC 5815 from subscription online streaming media identified under MCC 4899. A download, time-limited rental, live ticket and recurring catalog can therefore require different descriptions and potentially different classification.

The acquirer assigns the MCC from the principal activity and checkout. Disclose mixed stores, live access, adult or user-generated content, telecommunications bundles, tips and marketplace collection rather than route them through one undocumented streaming account.

Digital content is the parent classification, not a substitute

The broader guide to digital content payment processing covers downloads, apps and licenses. This page uses only the streaming-media provider classification and focuses on recurring access, live delivery and media rights.

03

Treat enrollment, renewal, price change, and cancellation as one flow

For US online negative-option billing, ROSCA requires material terms before billing information, express informed consent, and a simple way to stop recurring charges. Visa also publishes specific trial and introductory-offer requirements for covered subscription merchants, including confirmation, cancellation and advance notice before certain post-trial or changed charges.

Store the offer version, price, cadence, trial dates, consent action, credential status, notices, renewal transactions, cancellation request and result. A cancellation event should stop the appropriate future charge without erasing the customer's access and billing history.

  • Show the immediate charge, post-trial price, billing frequency and cancellation route beside enrollment.
  • Send a receipt or confirmation with the seller, descriptor, access tier, renewal terms and support contact.
  • Test price changes, failed-payment recovery, pauses, upgrades, downgrades and cancellation across every app surface.
04

Join the charge to the entitlement and actual access

A subscription flag proves only that an account was configured. For each charge, retain the customer account, accepted plan, access start and end, device and IP history, successful streams or event attendance, cancellation state, support messages and any refund. Keep this evidence tied to the processor transaction.

Separate service failure from non-use. If a live event fails or content is unavailable in the promised territory, record the outage and refund decision. If access was available but the customer did not watch, preserve the contract and access state without making a universal claim that non-use defeats a dispute.

05

Resolve territory, tax, and creator money before launch

Media rights can vary by country, title, event and device. The payment, entitlement and geolocation systems should enforce the same availability map so the merchant does not charge for access it cannot deliver. Document how VPN signals, travel and country changes are handled rather than promising perfect location detection.

EU VAT place-of-supply rules can locate consumer broadcasting and electronically supplied services where the customer resides. The exact tax treatment depends on the service and seller. Capture the location evidence the tax process requires and identify who invoices the customer and remits tax.

  • Separate subscription revenue from creator funds, tips, credits and advertising revenue.
  • Define when creator balances become payable and who absorbs refunds and chargebacks after payout.
  • Keep content-rights approval and payment-country approval aligned by service and territory.
06

Write refund, creator payout, reserve, and shutdown terms into the contract

Compare recurring-processing, gateway, currency, dispute, refund, account-updater, fraud and payout costs. A rolling reserve or settlement delay should be modeled against annual plans, trial conversion, event refunds and creator payouts, not only the monthly transaction total.

  • Which services, content types, legal entities, countries, MCCs, trials and billing intervals are approved?
  • Are creator collection, tips, credits, live events and creator payouts in scope, or only first-party subscriptions?
  • Which subscription, entitlement and usage data can be exported with each transaction?
  • How are refunds, access, creator balances, stored credentials and reserve releases handled after termination?

FAQ

Common questions

Is streaming media always MCC 5815?

No. Visa distinguishes electronically delivered films and music from subscription online streaming, and the acquirer assigns the code from the actual service and principal activity. Rentals, downloads, live access and mixed platforms should be described separately.

What should a streaming service retain for a renewal dispute?

Keep the accepted offer and consent, confirmation, notices, renewal transaction, descriptor, cancellation status, entitlement period, account and device access, support history and refund outcome. The applicable dispute condition determines which evidence matters.

Can a platform collect subscriptions for independent creators?

Only if its provider approves the marketplace or platform funds flow. The agreement should allocate creator onboarding, content controls, tax, refunds, disputes, negative balances and payouts; a first-party streaming account may not cover third-party collection.

Does cancellation require immediate loss of access?

Not necessarily. Cancellation stops future billing under the applicable terms, while access may continue through an already paid period. Keep billing status and entitlement status separate so the customer receives the promised access without another renewal.
