Digital content payments
Digital content payment processing
A download store, software license, paid library, creator marketplace, and recurring membership do not create the same payment file. The seller of record, delivery event, MCC, renewal terms, and evidence of access determine how the account is underwritten and how a dispute can be answered.

ACI Worldwide
ACI Worldwide supplies payment software. The merchant-facing ACI Payments Orchestration Platform provides an acquirer-independent gateway, routing, alternative-payment-method connections, omni-tokenisation, fraud decisioning and consolidated payment data. ACI Acquiring is separate software that banks and merchant acquirers use to run their own acquiring operations. In both products ACI provides technology; the merchant or PSP contracts with its chosen acquirers and payment providers, and those parties provide any merchant account or MID, underwrite payment acceptance, hold funds and settle transactions.

Bango
Bango supplies two distinct products for digital commerce. Bango Payments is an API layer that connects a merchant to direct carrier billing and wallet payment providers; the merchant remains the seller and ordinarily negotiates and receives its payment-provider settlement directly. The Digital Vending Machine bundles subscriptions for resellers and content providers, coordinating catalogue, entitlement, offer and billing events without making Bango the universal seller to the subscriber, card acquirer or merchant-account provider.

Boku
Boku provides a mobile-first local-payment network covering wallets, account-to-account schemes, buy-now-pay-later and direct carrier billing through one API and consolidated settlement. The relevant Boku operating entity processes or collects under the merchant agreement, while mobile carriers, wallets, banks, payment schemes and other acquirers remain separate participants. Named Boku entities provide regulated acquiring in specified markets, but the wider network does not give every merchant a card merchant account, MID or direct-acquiring relationship.

Its modular products provide hosted and API integration, connections to payment providers, rules-based routing, central tokenisation, consolidated reporting and white-label orchestration. Coda
Coda provides digital-commerce payment products whose legal and funds roles depend on the contract. Codapay connects a publisher to local and global payment channels through one API and supports arrangements in which either the publisher or an applicable Coda entity is Merchant of Record. Codashop and Coda-operated web stores can use a Coda reseller sale in which the named Coda entity sells the digital product to the buyer. Coda Payments Pte. Ltd. separately holds a Singapore Major Payment Institution licence that includes merchant acquisition, but that permission does not make it the acquirer for every Coda product, market or transaction.

Cybersource
Cybersource, a Visa company, provides a global payment gateway and orchestration platform, Unified Checkout, REST payment APIs, Token Management Service, Decision Manager, payer authentication, payment reporting and card-network payout connectivity. Its standard gateway path connects the merchant to external processors and acquirers; those parties provide any merchant account or MID, perform merchant underwriting, hold funds and settle transactions. The production Cybersource or Visa counterparty is determined by the signed agreement and territory rather than the non-production Developer Center terms. A current United States card-services package uses a separate agreement with Global Payments Direct, Inc., while the Cybersource Payment Services Agreement remains separate.

Digital Virgo
Digital Virgo connects merchants, digital-content publishers and telecom operators through the DV PASS carrier-billing platform. DV PASS manages merchant connections, subscriptions, transaction status, fraud controls and customer-care workflows, while the mobile operator controls subscriber eligibility, posts the charge to the prepaid balance or monthly bill and collects from the subscriber. UAB DV Payment, Digital Virgo's active Lithuanian electronic-money institution, separately contracts for regulated acquiring, holds transaction funds in segregated accounts and settles approved merchants. Its licence and funds role do not apply automatically to every DV PASS deployment or Digital Virgo group company.

EBANX
EBANX provides Pay-in processing, local payment methods, recurring payments, fraud and checkout tools, cross-border or local settlement, and Payouts across emerging markets in Latin America, Africa and Asia. The EBANX brand covers multiple group companies and local partners; the contracting entity, payment methods, settlement model and product availability depend on the merchant agreement and country. The documented flows do not establish EBANX as the merchant of record or a universal direct acquirer: the merchant remains the seller, while local acquirers, banks and payment rails may perform regulated parts of the flow.

Recurly
Recurly is subscription-management, recurring-billing and payment-orchestration technology. A merchant connects its own supported payment gateway and merchant bank account; the gateway, processor and acquirer authorize the payment, underwrite the merchant account, hold any reserve and settle funds to the merchant's bank. Recurly stores and routes payment data, manages plans, invoices, subscriptions, retries, dunning and reporting, but its terms state that Recurly is not a bank, does not hold merchant or customer money and is not responsible for transaction amounts. Reach can be connected separately as merchant of record; that makes Reach, not Recurly, the seller and funds-flow party for that route.

Decision brief
Tie each charge to a delivery event and entitlement
Use this page when
Downloads, software, paid libraries, creator sales or memberships create different delivery and dispute records.
Seller and product
Identify the seller of record and what the customer receives for each product line.
Consent
Capture subscription, renewal and immediate-delivery consent in the checkout record.
Entitlement evidence
Link payment to account creation, license delivery, access and use without retaining unnecessary data.
Create a dispute-ready record
- Product description, seller identity and delivery terms
- Checkout consent, renewal and cancellation evidence
- Account, device, access and fulfillment records
Define the product, delivery event, and seller of record
Start with what the customer buys: a permanent download, time-limited license, software feature, access pass, recurring library, live event, tip, or credit balance. The point at which the customer receives value is different for each model, and that event becomes the basis for refund operations and dispute evidence.
Identify the legal entity shown at checkout and on the statement. If a platform collects for creators or publishers, document whether it is the merchant of record, an agent, or only the technology layer; who sets price and refund policy; and when each supplier is paid. A gateway connection does not settle those roles.
- List every site, app, product type, price, currency, descriptor, and country of sale.
- Map the checkout seller, content owner, fulfillment system, tax party, and recipient of settlement.
- State whether access is permanent, metered, rented, subscription-based, transferable, or tied to an account.
Match the MCC to what the customer receives
Visa's merchant data standards distinguish electronically delivered books, films, music and artwork under MCC 5815, games under 5816, applications and software under 5817, and qualifying large digital-goods merchants under 5818. Subscription streaming can fall under MCC 4899. Those distinctions are a warning against treating every file or online service as one digital-content category.
The acquirer assigns the MCC from the principal business and actual transaction. A store mixing downloads, game items, SaaS, streaming and creator payments should expose those lines during underwriting rather than select a convenient code or route them through one undocumented account.
Streaming remains a separate payment case
This page covers the broader digital-content classification. A subscription streaming service has its own billing, access and cancellation lifecycle and is reviewed separately in the guide to streaming media payment processing.
Build consent into subscriptions and immediate delivery
For a US online negative-option offer, the Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act requires material terms before billing information, express informed consent, and a simple mechanism to stop recurring charges. Preserve the exact offer, price, cadence, trial conversion, consent action, confirmation, and cancellation result rather than only the current terms page.
For paid digital content not supplied on a tangible medium, loss of the EU withdrawal right after performance begins requires prior express consent, acknowledgement of that loss, and the required contract confirmation. Check the product, jurisdiction, and national implementation; card-network rules do not replace consumer law.
- Show the immediate charge, renewal amount or method of calculation, cadence, trial end, and cancellation route beside the purchase action.
- Send a durable receipt that identifies the product, seller, descriptor, access terms, and support route.
- Version the offer and consent record so the merchant can reconstruct what this customer accepted.
Preserve evidence of entitlement, access, and use
A payment receipt proves that a charge was submitted; it does not prove that the promised digital value reached the customer. Join the processor transaction to the customer account, product identifier, entitlement grant, download or activation event, device and IP data, and later use. Keep timestamps and the terms accepted at purchase.
Visa's dispute guidance describes specific compelling-evidence paths for certain card-absent fraud disputes, including matching account, device, IP, and prior undisputed transaction data. Eligibility and required fields depend on the dispute condition, so collecting evidence does not guarantee a reversal; it makes the record usable when the path applies.
Link fraud controls and refunds to the content account
Digital delivery compresses the time between authorization and loss. Card testing, account takeover, promotional abuse, credential sharing, automated downloads, and resale of keys need different controls. Rate limits and payment screening should therefore be joined to account age, device changes, login risk, entitlement value, and unusual consumption.
A refund should update both ledgers. Record the processor refund and the corresponding entitlement decision: revoked, retained under policy, partially consumed, or transferred. If access is suspended after a dispute, make that action consistent with the published terms and the applicable platform and consumer rules.
Settle the contract questions before launch
Pricing can combine processing, gateway, currency conversion, dispute, refund, recurring credential, fraud-tool and payout charges. A rolling reserve or delayed settlement must be modeled against creator or publisher payouts, refund timing, and the period during which customers can dispute access.
- Which products, URLs, legal entities, countries, MCCs and billing models are approved in writing?
- Who is merchant of record, owns tax and refund duties, and answers card-network disputes?
- Which delivery and usage fields can the integration export with each processor transaction?
- What happens to settlement, reserves, refunds and customer access after termination?
FAQ
Common questions
Is all digital content processed under one MCC?
No. Card-network standards distinguish several digital-goods, software, game and streaming activities. The acquirer assigns the MCC from the actual product and principal business; a merchant should disclose mixed product lines rather than choose a code itself.
What proves delivery of a digital product?
Use a joined record: transaction ID, customer account, product and entitlement, delivery or activation time, device and IP data, and subsequent access or use. The relevant evidence depends on the dispute condition and does not guarantee the outcome.
Can a platform process creator sales through its own account?
Only if the provider approves that funds flow and the contract identifies the platform's role. Creator onboarding, content rights, refunds, tax, settlement and payout responsibilities must be explicit; a standard single-seller account may not cover marketplace collection.
Does instant delivery remove the need for refunds?
No. Refund and withdrawal rights depend on the product, offer and jurisdiction. Immediate delivery changes the evidence and, in some jurisdictions, requires specific consent; it does not create a universal no-refund rule.
